San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, has the busiest ocean terminal in the West Indies and is one of the cruise ship industries most important ports. The city of San Juan is capable of handling the many thousands of cruise passengers that leave and depart on cruise ships each week. Puerto Rico is the number-one port of embarkation in the
Caribbean, with more than 1.2 million visitors embarking on 700 cruises
every year from here. Most cruise lines sell pre- and post-cruise
packages that include hotel stays.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is on the city’s east side, about
7 1⁄2 miles from the port. Taxi fares from the airport are fixed. The
ride to the port takes at least 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Remember you are on an island, just relax and enjoy the ride.
Most of the cruise ships dock at historic Old San Juan, but during very
busy times, you may get docked at one of the less convenient cargo piers
across the water from the old town, requiring a taxi ride.
